Dax

„Yoga makes me mentally and spiritually happy“

What a feeling to be a co-owner of the studio where one began to practice Bikram yoga. Sathean Dax Dissopa is from Thailand, he has been visiting the studio since 2008. Last spring he did the Teacher Training in Los Angeles – after having had different trainings in other yoga styles, such as absolute Yoga in Thailand – the way they do it in the Yoga Corner in Schlieren.

His business partner Othmar „Kasi“ Wicki is a former soccer player, suffering from a variety of sports injuries and having had both hips replaced. He did his first Bikram Yoga workout in 2009. For him, too, the yoga in the heated room has become a great passion.

Dax also knows about business life. When he learnt about Yoga his life changed completely. “Yoga changed my mind, my health and I feel really happy. I like to share this positive energy with all the students.” His kindness will not only keep the previous students but also bring further yogis in his studio.

The evening before, when I drove back from the fourth studio to the hotel, I had to change busses in the dark. Suddenly I became aware of the nearby studio, the one I wanted to visit next day. It is situated near the Astoria Metro station, and near to the bus and tram interchange. I saw Yogis practicing and I was looking forward to the next day.

The studio belongs to the same owner as the Bikram Yoga Buda; it sports the same logos, the same decorations and even the same dark wood. Like in the other one, the staircase leads to the first floor but here, it is more generous. Inside, there is little free space in the changing rooms. The early Saturday morning class has just finished and these yogis mix with the new ones; the rooms are crowded. It seems unbelievable how many Yogis like the Bikram Yoga in Hungary. In the class I attend, there are once more 30 students.

Rita is the instructor. Of course I don’t understand a single word, but I like to follow her intonation, I seem to recognise some of the words which are repeated. Spoiled as I am by the new heating system of Zurich, I can’t understand why the older Budapest studios have not changed yet to the more modern systems (the two new ones did). If you choose a spot near a valve where hot steam comes out, you are sure to have to suffer a lot. This time I am careful and pick a place a bit further away and all goes smoothly. The Hungaryans are lucky; they have five studios in Budapest alone to choose from!

Bikram Yoga Szentmihali Budapest

The newest official Bikram yoga studio opened in January 2014 not too far from the Puskas Ferenc Stadion. Situated in a modern building really close to a bus station, it is easy to find. There is a lot of red colour which is repeated in the Logo, representing a locust. It’s  stunningly beautiful. Marina und Kristina didn’t design it just in a functional manner but also in an aesthetic one. The vast hot room in the upper floor is enclosed with two walls full of small high windows.

The owners told me that the Friday afternoon class would be poorly attended. So I am surprised that we are more than 20 people practicing. Adriana is teaching; she is standing or kneeing behind us, the way they do it in the Netherlands. From time to time, she regulates the heating-air-conditioning-system. Which is well hidden: One doesn’t notice any pipes, tubes or other equipments. When we started, the sun was shining, when we end, it is dark night. Adriana offers us frozen towels to cool down our sweat soaked faces which we take with great pleasure: a highlight!

Bikram Yoga Hattyu Budapest

Hattyu utca 14, 1015 Budapest, www.bikramyoga.hu

Zsuzsanna Andre brought the Bikram Yoga to Hungary. She opened the very first studio in Budapest „in the Hills“ ten years ago. Meanwhile there are five official Bikram yoga studios, but hers is still in a leading position. Three and a half years ago she felt she needed more space and moved to a very modern and stylish building near the former Moskow square. The studio is located on the forth level. What I could only guess was the beautiful garden with a fountain and a tiny lake in it, just at the bottom of the castle hill. Concerning the hot room: Its sheer size and the special layout are impressive. The leather furniture is classy and precious, there is a lot of wood and indivually changeable light sources.

I chose to attend a „Candlelit“ class. Teacher Andrea gives the instructions. For me, it is an overhelming experience. She placed candles everywhere: in front of the mirrors, besides the columns and on the top of small sills. There is music all along, sometimes a choir is singing, then one listens to rhythmical instruments. Andrea is practicing too – she gives a silent-class. I wish there was something similar in Switzerland too!

Sie sagt: „I realize that even a thousand lives would not be enough to become a master of any trend of yoga.”

Edit Varkonyi has been practicing Bikram yoga for several years and has never felt so good – without considering to deal with it professionally. Then she applied for the Teacher Training in fall 2011 already with the aim of opening a studio. Zsuzsa André, the owner of the first Bikram Yoga Studio in Hungary gave her the opportunity to explore the world as a teacher until the opening of her own Studio.  This was in January 2013.

„I read and learn more and more about yoga and anatomy“

After the obvious difficulties of the first months she enjoys teaching extremely. „Now that I read and learn more and more about yoga and anatomy I realize that even a thousand lives would not be enough to become a master of any trend of yoga“, she says. She also says that there issomething in common with her original education: She graduated as an economist and  was dealing with organizing international fairs and later on she held senior manager posts at three different banks for a decade. In recent years she has been active as an executive coach, which profession can be harmonized with yoga completely. The creative manager of her studio is her daughter, a graduated designer.

Bikram Yoga Buda Budapest

Like the name tells, the Bikram yoga studio Buda is located at the Buda side of Budapest. Next Sunday it will celebrate its 3th birthday. Krisztina Falkay is the owner of this studio, since a short time she too manages the Karoly Körut studio in the centre near the Astoria metro station. If you know where to look for it, it’s not difficult to find the Buda studio. Unfortunately, the homepage often doesn’t switch to the English pages as it is supposed to do, and quite often shows only „sorry not found“.

The worn out stone stairs don’t really give you the feeling of being welcome. Nevertheless, on the first floor one is received by incense stick filled air. The hot room has enough space for fourty people or more. There are infrared-lamps on the ceiling and small steam vaporizers along the walls. What I liked best is the cosy place to relax after the training – with tea and apple slices.

Linda is teaching the second morning lesson, which starts at 9 o’clock. We are 20 yogis, the teacher watches if we follow her instructions accurately. When the first morning lesson ended, quite a number of  Yogis left the room; soaked with sweat. It seems Hungary is a country where Bikramyoga is very popular!

Bikram Yoga Ujpest Budapest

Csanyi Laszlo utca 34, 1043 Budapest, www.bikramyogaujpest.hu

Undoubtedly, Edit Varkonyi is a power woman. In January 2013 she opened the forth Bikram yoga studio in Budapest. It’s located in the north, in the Pest-side and easily and quickly reachable by the subway. The Danube river and busy Metro stations are nearby, which one doesn’t notice. The contrary is the case: Schools, small businesses, small houses and some higher ones dominate the quiet surroundings. The owner invested a lot in the new studio. The furniture and the coulours have been carefully chosen and she left enough space in the rooms. The hot room looks quite spacious. The heating system is certainly one of the most modern in the city.

There is soft music before the lesson starts. Then Edit teaches in a lively, motivating manner. Even though I don’t understand one word, I can follow because how she intonates, how she moves tells me what’s going on. And of course because I can see the 16 other students. Edit is also a certified Barkan teacher. Which is an other type of hot Yoga with all but four postures like Bikram taught them. Edit is open for this sort of yoga and sure about the benefits. However she doesn’t have the courage yet to offer Barkan lessons in her Bikram yoga studio. I truly hope she will do so soon, so I have a reason to come back to her place once more – and have a different class in her strikingly beautiful studio.
