„The hardest part is getting yourself in the studio…“

„The hardest part is getting yourself into the studio for the first time and then your Bikram Yoga journey begins…“, sagt sie.

Before Estelle Cartlidge opened her own studio in Liverpool, she had to practice in Manchester. About other sorts of yoga did she learn early. She sparked her interest in the human body following a degree in advanced study of early years with human and biological science, which included a focussed study of anatomy, diet and nutrition.

She came across a Bikram training programme, when she was on a family holiday in Malta. She liked it and did the real Teacher Training afterwards, three years ago. Passionate about being the first person to bring Bikram to Liverpool, Estelle began her search for the perfect site for the state-of-the-art studio which she found in Liverpool’s business district.

She wants everyone in Liverpool to know that Bikram Yoga is accessible to him or her. „The hardest part is getting yourself into the studio for the first time and then your Bikram Yoga journey begins…“, she says.

Bikram Yoga Liverpool

When you think of Liverpool, you remember the Beatles, the rich culture, football of course, but one doesn’t link it to Bikram yoga. However, since two years, there is a studio, the first in Liverpool. Estelle Cartlidge is the founder. It’s situated in a modern building, not far from the coach station or the Lime street railway station. It’s one of the studios which will be unforgettable for me. I am thinking of the front desk area, the friendly welcome, the large modern rooms, decorated with plants and numerous small Buddha statues. Even the showers are special, there are quite a few – every single one of them with a swing door. The most impressive room is the hot room, it is huge and friendly. The heating and airconditionig system works efficiently and engeniously. At the very moment when I started suffering from the heat comes a wonderful cooling blow of air.

Estelle herself is teaching. She spreads a good athmosphere, she is teaching in a quiet but decided manner. There are only half of the people as in the Manchester studio, so Estelle can concentrate on all of the yogis und add small personal corrections to her dialogue. At the end of the lesson all are clapping. She is able to bring Bikram yoga home, the way she wanted it!

Bikram Yoga Manchester

Danke Michelle!

Bikram Yoga Manchester is conveniently located in the heart of the Northern Quarter, the creative and bohemian area of Manchester. The studio is only minutes away from the transport hub of Piccadilly Gardens, Piccadilly and Victoria stations. Built in the traditional warehouse style, the studio offers a bright, airy space; a large reception, large changing rooms with numerous showers. There is also a large comfortable seating area where one can have a drink and relax after class.

The colours white and blue dominate, there is hardly any decoration. Fortunately, the women changing rooms are special, because of the red banks and the sparkling red chandelier. It’s a pity I ‚m not allowed to take photos. I had written several times to the owner, David Marshalsea, who simply didn’t answer and during my visit he was on vacation (a glamorous, wonderful studio doesn’t necessarily mean that the communication works…). The hot room is immensely big, only in Spain did I see such a huge room. Plenty of space for six rows; the mats have to been placed exactly where points are painted on the floor. The studio is highly insulated and the heating system includes heat exchanger technology to reduce heat loss and increase efficiency therefore keeping environmental impact to a minimum.

Michelle, who did recently the Teacher Training together with Balz from Basel, is teaching – in a way as if she had taught many many classes before. The tall blonde woman urges us to give the best. Without any doubt she has the three dozen yogis under control. She promises me to organize some photos for the blog. Thank you Michelle!

Bikram Yoga Glasgow

After having seen the neglected surroundings, one would expect the certified Bikram Yoga Studio in Glasgow  to be shabby and old. But after the rusty iron stairs you seem to enter an altogether different world : a very nice and friendly reception area, enough changing rooms and even a separate room where you can have your herbal tea after the lesson leave a positive impression. The highlight is the bright, spacious trapezoid hot room where the big windows offer much light and a feeling of airiness. An overwhelming smell of lemon oil is raising the spirit even more.

30 yogis are practicing; like yesterday in Edinburgh there are quite a few men (even on a Friday afternoon at 3!). It reigns a good discipline, Alexander, the teacher seems to have an aura of natural autority mixed with kindness.

When the temperature becomes hotter and more humid, Alexander opens some windows for a short time (like they did it in Zurich in earlier times). It’s heavenly! If I had to choose between the two Glasgow’s studios, I would regularly practice here and visit the other now and then for additional training and because of its unique athmosphere…

Infinity Hot Yoga Glasgow

There is much more to Hot Yoga than Bikram.“

That’s for sure, there are more beautiful studios, more modern and larger ones then the small, intimate Infinity Hot Yoga under a former railway viaduct. Colette Ward (see picture) opened it three and a half years ago. Originally she did the Teacher Training with Bikram many years ago and she offers every week one class („from your bones to your skin – the original Bikram sequence). Nevertheless, she learnt about different styles of yoga and emerged further, for example to Absolut Hot Yoga. Now she says: „There is much more to Hot Yoga than Bikram.“

All at once one feels at ease at this place with it’s individual and cosy style. The floor in the hot room is, a rarity, made out of wood. Especially the welcome is quite outgoing.

This Friday morning, Jamie, a cheerful young man, is teaching. He did his Teacher Training in absolut Yoga in Thailand. When he says hello to the 10 Yogis, all of them reply with a warm greeting. He is wearing colourful shorts and does a great part of the workout himself, even though he is teaching: this is unusual and must be exhausting. It’s a so called Moksha class – with many postures from the original Bikram yoga. But there are more exercices and even more strenous ones. After a while I am getting used to his Scottish English and I start feeling more and more comfortable in these surroundings.

Bikram Yoga Edinburgh

Emma Campion, Bikram Yoga Teacher for 14 years, opened the only certified studio in Edinburgh two years ago. The school is located in a blind alley. You have to go through an iron gate and find a warehouse at the back of the main building. My expectations weren’t too high because of this not very promising outlook. But I was surprised when Mario, the guest teacher opened the door, to find a huge entrée with cosy furniture, warm and welcoming. The other rooms are rather sparse, whereas the hot room is more than spacious.

We are 20 yogis, nearly half of them are men. It is an important day for the UK: „Parlamentary General Election“ can be read here and there. Mario from the Netherlands who started with Bikram Yoga in Amsterdam is the teacher. He has taught in Linz, Vienna, in Liverpool and even in Jakarta. He seems to know all the yogis of Edinburgh. He is teaching with speed, demanding a lot from us, he is keeping near the dialogue and finds nevertheless time to correct mistakes. The next lesson he will practice himself.

As to the triangle posture: Here it’s done the way Bikram taught it originally, not standing on the mat but across to it – with the desireable result that you can see yourself perfecty in the front mirror. A novelty for me: a red affectionate tomcat is straying through the changing rooms…
