Bikram Yoga Cork

Kate Mc Namara opened the Bikram yoga Cork at Irland’s South coast 5 years ago. It is located in a business and retail park in the South of the town, easily accessable from the highway. Not like Amsterdam where most of the yogis arrive by bycicle, here the car is the means of transport. Like in all the other studios in Ireland – except some in Dublin.

The one-storey-building is visibly labeled. The furnishings and equipment are rather simple, but all of it colourfully, mostly in red and very efficiently. The hot room isn’t a rectangle like in the most studios but nearly square, so the yogis can practise in five rows. There are two doors of glass, one exacly in front of the studio door, so the yogis can see the outside of the studio in the front mirror.

Dia Silverstein is teaching the second lesson in this Saturday morning. 31 yogis, 7 among them men, give their best. The teacher is instructing in a high pace, but even so she is able to tell corrections. She sets a point in correct breathing.
It’s hot and is becoming even hotter and there is the humidity. On and on yogis are sitting down to relax. I am glad to be able to keep up with all the postures. And I am also thrilled to have practised in this last studio I visited in the Republic of Ireland.

Bikram Yoga Galway

Tracy Dunbar’s Bikram yoga studio in Galway is a highlight! I intended to visit the only studio in the West of Ireland last year, but Tracy asked me to wait. She had owned the first studio in West-Ireland for ten years. Then she decided to buy room in the the building next to the former studio. For two years there was a complete refurnishing. The waiting was worth while; this huge gorgeously beautiful studio sets new standards.

The hot room is huge – 45 yogis are able to practice, which they are doing on a flooring specifically designed for use in hot yoga studios as it is antimicrobial, water proof and slip resistant. It is gentle on the feet and easy on muscles and joints. The heating is managed by infrared panels; so the heat warms the body and not the air. The air-conditioning system provides the yogis with fresh air, what is even more effective because of the refreshing citrus perfume. The room’s light colour can be changed. The changing rooms are spacious, the showers on the top of modernity; there is plenty of space and tasteful furniture. The studio is located in the “Wellbeing Centre”, where there is a hairdresser, a nutritionist, a massage and other services – all under the same roof.

Tracy is teaching us 30 yogis, one fifth of them men. Before the lesson starts, we hear background music. The hot room is bathed in blue light. Tracy, the longtime teacher is amazing. She modulates her warm lively voice from strong and intense to a whisper. Even after having taught for so many years she is beaming, motivating, surprising. How is she able to manage such a beautiful studio beside the teaching? After our workout she will be even teaching two more lessons!

Bikram Yoga Limerick

„You might hate this posture“, sagt sie über die Halbe Heuschrecke, „but your body will love it.“

Delta Sports Dome, Delta Retail Park, Ballysimon Road, V94 RR2C Limerick, www.bikramyogalimerick.ie

Lucky who knows where to find the Bikram yoga Limerick. My husband and I were looking for it for quite some time. The problem is that there are two entries in the internet at different places. Once found, I was happy.

Cora Ryan opened it 4 years ago in a business zone in the East of Limerick. It’s located in the so called Sports Dome, a building where different kinds of sports are offered. Bikram Yoga is taught on the first level, in a huge room. The floor is covered with a red carpet – like in the most studios Ireland’s. The changing rooms and showers are simple yet sufficient and functional. The reception area is bright and friendly.

Laura is teaching this Wednesday morning class in a quiet manner and in a great continuity. We are 7 women and 3 men. The teacher manages to instructor us yogis wihtin 90 minutes not only a perfect dialogue but also to tell us about the benefits of the different postures. „You might hate this posture“, she says about the Half Locust pose, „but your body will love it.“

Tricia Fleming

„I wanted to pass  the benefits to others“

IMG_7316

„I wanted to pass  the benefits to others“

Tricia trained with founder Bikram Choudhury in his LA studio in 2002 and she has been teaching Bikram yoga throughout Ireland and as far afield as Thailand and South Africa since 2003. Having badly injured her back in a horse riding accident in 1997, she was told that she would have to regularly visit osteopaths or chiropractors for the rest of her life. That was the case until a friend told her of the amazing benefits of yoga. After trying various different forms of Hatha Yoga, which is the most common type of yoga practised in the western world, bringing you to your peak of fitness both mentally and physically, she discovered Bikram Yoga. She decided to concentrate on Bikram Yoga as this form of hatha yoga focuses on strengthening the spine and knees in particular. We all know that if you have a healthy strong spine you are well on the road to physical fitness as our spine is our core. Lower back pain is one of the main reasons for absenteeism at work. So having noticed the difference yoga made to her back—no more trips to the osteopath were required—Tricia decided to train as a yoga teacher and pass on its amazing healing benefits to others.

Bikram Yoga Athlone

Unit 7D, Ground Floor, Monksland Retail Park Monksland, www.bikramyogaathlone.com

Tricia Fleming opened her own Bikram yoga studio in Athlone four and a half years ago. I won’t forget her. Firstly, because she gave me a warm welcome. She was waiting for me and showed me the different rooms. There are even two hot rooms, a smaller one and one quite spacious. She told me where she used to teach before she thought about opening her own studio. In her opinion it would be worth it, even though there are several studios in Dublin and one in Galway at the opposite coast. It turned out she was right.

This Tuesday morning Tricia is expecting a quiet class. Yet we are 14 yogis practising: 10 women and 4 men. Tricia is a exceptional teacher, strict und very very precise; that’s the second reason I won’t forget her. One becomes aware that she has many years of experience and that this job is her mission. She adds some small adjustements to exercises, so the yogis improve in the postures. Her corrections are convincingly clear and simple, but nevertheless indeed effective. Thank you Tricia!!

“Every one will soon see what his body is able to achieve”

Özkan Kul practiced different sorts of yoga. His aim always was to find out more about body and mind. When he learnt 2008 about Bikram Yoga this type of yoga convinced him most. He did his Teacher Training 2011 at Bikram’s. When he learned more about the relations between body and mind, the wish to deepen that knowledge intensified. He became an alternative practitioner and exercised in a medical practise together with 5 others. He felt what he expected: the connection, convinced there would be a mutual reaction.

He and his wife Mirjam, who is a psychologic alternative practioner, decided to open a Bikram Yoga studio together with a alternative practise. When they found the ideal location, they started to turn it into a studio according to their imagination. They can already say that the combination between Bikram yoga and the alternative practise is a success. He may ask his clients to do some postures at home and later he will recognize some improvement. On the other side he can watch his yogis make little mistakes which he can correct or he can actually cure them. He doesn’t stick to the dialogue too closely, rather he adds some information how the postures work. He tells that he likes the contact with people and is looking forward for every single yogi attaining his class. “Every one will soon see what his body is able to achieve”

On February 1st  opened a first-class studio in the middle von the old town of Munich, called Bikram Hot Yoga im Tal, according to the name of the road where it is located – near the Heiliggeist church, the old townhouse and the toy museum. „When ever we hear anything up here, it is church bells. Which is really nice“, Özkan Kul is telling me. He opened the studio on the fifth floor together with his wife Mirjam. „Over the roofs of Munich“ a Yogi writes in a review. Which brings it to the point.

Everything is nice, fresh, welcoming and yet also cosy. In the hot room the floor is covered in genuine wood parquet. Opposite the front mirrors is a row of windows opening towards old houses next to the Heiliggeist church. The changing rooms and showers are simple with wood also, which is the case too for the front desk. An extra room with sofas and apples is reserved for relaxing for after class. Mirjam tells about her favorite „Schmankerl“, the roof terrasse including a phantastic view over the roofs. Here you can really take in fresh air and feel comfortable; during summer time one can also do yoga outside. Mirjam is going to put plants and outside furniture.

Özkan is also an alternative practitioner and a yoga therapeut. He says: „I want the yogis to be engaged in their bodys. Then they will be able to make it stronger and receive a better awareness of life.“ He is teaching the Lunch-Express class, which lasts 60 instead of 90 minutes. We are 3 yogis practising. The evening classes are much better booked. Thanks his education he can not only teach the postures but to inform us also about their effectiveness. I definitively found my absolute favourite studio!
