Bikramyoga Hamburg Eppendorf

The two sisters Judith and Marlen Köhler were the first ones to open a Bikram Yoga studio in Germany in the middle of Eppendorf back in 1999 and to bring Hot Yoga from the US to Hamburg. They’ve stayed devoted to Bikram Yoga to this day; their lessons still are part of the time table. However, after 13 years of experience in managing the studio, teaching and the love of Yoga the two included other kinds of Yoga, such as Forrest-, Power-, Flow- and Gentle – Yoga, as well. Whoever dares to have a look inside the studio, is able to try out all these forms of Yoga.

I stroll along the pavement of the old Eppendorfer Landstrasse until the evening of this late summer. A pub or a little shop is standing next to the other. The Bikram Yoga studio is placed in the backyard of a loft. Virtuosic piano playing is ringing from a neighbouring backstreet. Pillows, Curtains and colourful fabrics are dominating the entrance. An iron circular staircase leads into the slightly slanted Upper floor. The heat is stored with the help of a transparent foil on top of the stairs. The charm of the 19th century is distinctive. Narrow, wooden roof beams break through the white, roof lights promise heat through a cloudless, blue sky. Completely new to me is the positioning of the teacher. She’s not standing in front of her students, like everybody else, but behind them. I suspect the reasoning behind this is, that she is able to see the poses from the back and reflected through the mirror, as well, standing in this position, which provides her with a perfect overview. Having got this, she is able to see even the slightest mistake and correct it with ease. I’m very happy having included this studio – so rich in tradition – into my already stuffed schedule!
