Clara Pizzaferry und Ben Conway

„We fell in love with Trieste!“

“So far we are very happy with our choice”, sagt Ben. Die Eröffnung war im April.

“My goal is to change the world through yoga, one person at a time”, so Ben. “I want to bring that change to other people’s lives, and that’s why I changed my life at 33 and left banking in London for this life.”

„We fell in love with Trieste!“

Clara Pizzaferri from Milan (a former dancer and performer) and Ben Conway from Greenwich are 50/50 owners, agnd they also are parnters outside the studio – having met at the Bikram Yoga training in fall 2014. They travelled the world for almost 2 years to experience as many studios as possible and find out where they wanted to open one. After settling on opening a studio in Italy they searched again for 6 months until they found Trieste. “So far we are very happy with our choice”, says Ben. The opening was in April.

“My goal is to change the world through yoga, one person at a time.” He knows this yoga practice has made more positive changes in his life than any other single thing he did, and he has seen it to have the same impact on many others. “I want to bring that change to other people’s lives, and that’s why I changed my life at 33 and left banking in London for this life.” He truly believes that the world can be changed for the better if we all do our part, however small it may seem doing it one person at a time through yoga.

Hot Yoga Trieste

Schliesslich entschieden sie sich für Triest: „It was love at first sight“, sagen sie heute.

Via Mazzini 14, 34121 Trieste, www.hotyogatrieste.com

After the Studios in Italy in Rom, Bologna, Milan, Padua and Pordenone, there is nowadays a small, fine studio in Trieste at the Adria coast. Clara Pizzaferri from Milan and Benjamin Conway from Greenwich opened it this spring. They spent years of travelling, teaching Bikram yoga und looking for the right spot of her new studio and how it should look like. In 40 different studios they taught in 6 different languages. They decided to stay for good in Trieste and to fulfill their dream of an own studio. „It was love at first sight“, they say about Trieste.

There is a hot-yoga-community about to develop. At the Sunday evening class we were 11 yogis practising, 7 women and 4 men. We were taught by Ben in English. Before, at 3 p.m., they offered a class for newcomers. 30 showed up, several had to be turned away, as the hot room is only for 24 students. Because of this there were a few with no practice at all in our lesson. The immense interest was the consequence of an article in the local newspaper – a great pleasure for the owners!

Ben is teaching with speed but without to push too hard. He is dedicated and competent. He tells the newbies of his very first lesson in the hot room, that he didn’t manage all the postures but instead had to lie down exhausted on the floor. The studio is a real pearl. The hot room is designed with one goal in mind: removing all distractions so everyone can focus. The heating is computer controlled to deliver exactly 40°C and 40% humidity, the ideal environment to practice Bikram Yoga. The air exchange system ensures that the lungs are being filled with fresh, oxygenated air straight off the Adriatic see. This will probably be the last studio to visit for my blog because all the Bikram studios in Europe I had found out about I have written about in my blog earlier (170). And it’s one of the most beautiful I have ever seen!

Yoga Loft Buncrana

Lisfannon Industrial Estate, Co Donegal Buncrana, www.facebook.com/yogaloftbuncrana/

Buncrana is located on Inishoven peninsula, some 20 kilometres to the North West of Londonderry, the second largest town of Northern Ireland. First Sabrina owned a Hot-yoga-studio in Londonderry. She had to close it. She moved to Buncrana, a short distance away but situated in the Republic of Ireland. In an industrial estate close to one of the numerous golf courses of the region, she offers different styles of yoga at different temperatures. She became a certified Bikram Yoga teacher in 2012, but practises Ashtanga-Yoaga these days. There are only 2 lessons of Bikram-Express-Yoga every week which last only 60 minutes. All 12 classes she offers in her studio Sabrina teaches herself.

The studio is small and there are no changing rooms and no showers, just a toilet. The yogis – we are 7 women – turn up already dressed in leggins. After the workout they disappear in their cars without changing. Her clients are locals tells Sabrina who lives in Buncrana herself. The studio seems to be quite successful. At the end of the class there is music and there are joss sticks. I am glad I did an exhausting 90-minute-class in the morning in Lisburn, so the short Express-class was a nice  ending of a day of travel and excercise.

Bikram Hot Yoga Lisburn

„Erin you are welcome anytime at my place in Switzerland!“

46-48 Market Square, Lisburn BT28 1AG, www.bikramyogalisburn.com

What a nice, lively place near the Market Square in Lisburn. Bikram Yoga Lisburn is new to Lisburn but has been around in Belfast since 2007. Erin Douglas and Tony Hiley relocated from Yoga At The Mill. Erin opened the very first studio of Northern Ireland in Belfast in 2007. Now she is back in her original home town of Lisburn. The studio has a quite charming ambiance, which feels so welcoming that it is opening your heart right away. It is decorated with love and compassion, yet without being crowded.

It’s an honor to be taught by Erin. She is able to notice every mistake. She lectures also about the benefits of this sort of yoga and how you should leave your comfort zone. She is teaching like she did it the very first – with all her energy, even tough it is a long time ago she did the teacher training: 13 years, at the same time like Stefan who opened the frist studio in Switzerland.

We are 4 women and 3 men, so we have a lot of space in the hot room. The temperature is perfect, the atmosphere motivating. No question, if I lived here I would be a regular customer. „Erin you are welcome anytime at my place in Switzerland!“

The Yoga Farm Lisburn

29 Quarterlands Rd, Drumberg, BT27 5TN, www.theyogafarm.co.uk

Three years ago, Jayne Leckey opened her studio „The Yoga Farm“ near Lisburn in the south of Belfast. The studio is added to a privat home in a rural area some 5 miles off Lisburn’s center. Only an insider will find this small and cozy studio without the help of a GPS; the access road is small but there is ample parking space. The roof of the studio is mirrored in the hot room. There are mirrors on two sides, while a milk glass window at one side and two roof window allow plenty of light to come in.

Jayne started with Bikram Yoga in 2007 in the studio in Belfast, the first in Northern Ireland. Since 2009 she is a certified Bikram Yoga teacher and used to teach in Belfast, Dublin and London.

Jude who teaches today does so with a quiet voice and a safe manner.  We are 10 women and 3 men. The studio has a sophisticated integrated heat exchange system providing ventilation so you can sweat it out knowing you have fresh oxygen in the room at all times. Ann, Jayne’s stepdaughter trains in front of me. Her practise is amazing and is very motivating to keep training when and where ever it will be possible.

Tinks Yoga Center Ljubljana

Kolarjeva ulica 47, 1000 Ljubljana, www.tinksyoga.com

When I visited the new Ljubljana studio last November, I didn’t know there was another one: the Tinks Yoga Center in the North of the city. Tinkara Koncar opened it shortly after the one in the southern town center. Both seem to do well. I attend a lesson in the early evening. We are 20 women and one man who train in the big square room with the beautiful wooden floor. The room climate is agreeable, the heat the way it should be. And fresh air is let in steadily. for the next lesson they expect even 26 yogis to come.

Tinkara is teaching the first set in Slowenic, the second (because of my presence) in English. Abroad I like to attend a lesson in the local language I don’t unterstand but to know exactly what I have to do. Tinkara is full of spirit, acting lively. She also offers other sorts of yoga and Hot Pilates. Her mother is taking part, she has been practising only for a short time. She tells me that she can’t do many postures yet, but she is learning und acts quite as a role model.

Her daughter did her Teacher Training back in 2013 in Los Angeles. She grew up in Ljubljana, spent nine years as a professional dancer all over the world. She learnt about Bikram Yoga and how it can heal your body in London. Her partner Simon and she opened the bright, modern studio with the special, welcoming atmosphere six months ago. She combines yoga and medicine, having learnt the connection and the influence of each other by Tiffany Cruikshank.

Bikram Yoga Ljubljana

Ukmarjeva ulica 6, 1000 Ljubljana, www.bikramjoga.si/

The 1st of Oktober 2016 the first Bikram-Yoga-Studio in Slowenia had opened. It is located 5 kilometers to the South of the train main station. Ljubljana is quite a pearl of a town, and of the studio you can fullheartedly say the same. Denis Dronjic used his love and his creativity to build a wonderful studio. The walls of the wardrobe are in red because he wants to stimulate the yogis. In the reception aera he took different sorts of precious woods. In the lounge there are Buddhas, fruits, tea, nuts and cookies. You can also see that music is important to the owner, not only the instruments on display but also the music that is playing in the background. The changing rooms hold the same woods. And even the hot room where 30 yogis can practise is covered in wood – bamboo. A huge wall painting shows Denises vision, painted by an artist. It shows himself at the age of 28, circled by 28 stars. You can see the energy which leaves from him, a sphynx, the aura around him.

Who can live his love of yoga and lives it every day, who learnt walking again after a very serious accident can teach in a way that everyone feels what a good thing they do by practising. We are five women (there will be another class afterwards). Denis is motivating, explinating, demonstrating, correcting and he says also, what the different postures are good for. Not only the town is an adventure, the studio is one too and the special class anyway. At the beginning he strokes a gong and at the end he draws spherical sounds from it.

The best male teacher ever!!!

Industrigatan 14, 212 14 Malmö, www.bikramyoga360.se

Erik Persson is really dedicated to Bikram yoga. So much that he decided to open a studio of his own half a year ago – at the Industriegatan in the outskirts of Malmö. The studio is at the same premises as the training center „Crossfit360“, on the first floor. So synergies can be used – the showers that are for both parts or the possibility, to practise here and there.

Erik did the Teacher Training in 2009, together with Karin Circelli-Kempf and Beat Urech from Zurich. He did workshops in Zurich too. Earlier he used to teach in the Hotyoga studio in Malmö. But in recent times they reduced the original Bikram lessons and offered other sorts of yoga styles instead. So the teacher had to open his own studio. It is a small one: with a hot room heated by infrared, a small reception area and the above mentioned changing room and showers. His wife Hanna is also a Bikram yoga teacher. She doesn’t teach at the moment because of her pregnancy. That’s why Erik has to teach every single lesson. He even combines teaching and practising – admirable. There were classes with up to 39 people and yestersay Sunday they were 19.

Not only did he get prizes and medals (he was once European Champion or the best male scholar in the Teacher Training), but he is also a very gifted teacher. Now he is teaching us 4 women at this Monday morning. In English, so I can follow all the details he is explaining. Which is lucky, because his hints are absolutely efficient. His voice is likeabble and full of live and joy. At the very end, when we relax in Savasana, he is straightening the legs, the arms and the heads of us yogis. Which lets us flow to a deep relaxation, we don’t even hear the sounds from downstairs. For me it is the best male teacher ever!!

Bikram Yoga Fana Bergen

Nesttunveien 92, 5221 Bergen, www.bikramyogafana.no

Nesttun, a part of the well known Bergen is located between Bergen Airport and the city. It’s a cool Sunday noon, the village seems to be deserted. When I visited Bergen a year ago I wrote about the what I then thought to be the only Bikram yoga studio. Meanwhile I found out about the new one in Nesttun a few kilometres outside the city center with its ever present tourist crowd.

Tone Sandal and Anne Jorunn Vadla offer not only the original Bikram Yoga style but also other sorts of yoga in the heated room – as it becomes more and more normal these days. Like Vinyasa flow or Yin or Core. I took part in a so called Silent Class: Tone who has an excellent practise, is the teacher. She announces the postures at the beginning only and the end. Nothing else, there are no corrections. So the yogis have to know how to do the postures correctly. For beginners, this can nor be recommended. I tried my first Silent Class in Köln and since then I always enjoy the opportunity for practising it again.

We are nine women and two men practising besides the teacher. In the background you can here low music playing, so decently that you can also hear the sweat drops falling on the hygienic carpet floor. All the rooms in the ground floor are modern, bright and spacious. I am very grateful for this experience high up in the North: the long trip was worth it!

Bikram Yoga Alicante

While regular tourists are swarming the beaches, those who like Hotyoga go to the new studio in Alicante that is located a few kilometres in the east of the town. In a part where lots of palm trees grow, close to the radial road.

Delia, the receptionist, says hello to the yogis. Nuria, the instructor, is teaching 12 women and 4 men – in the same spirited and confident way as did Sandra in La Coruña two and a half weeks ago. You find the studio at ground level, there is wood all over the reception area which gives us a cosy impression. You find a corner to relax, individual showers and a hot room in the colours grey, anthrazite and white. The floor is hygienic and in low-maintenance.

Nuria didn’t promise too much when she told of an agreable heat. It’s true, you sweat and sweat as usual but you sense the heat without the feeling of not be able to breath. Tereza takes the same class; she was my teacher one year ago in Elche. Nuria used to teach in Madrid and was accustomed to large classes. In the beginning, nobody in Alicante knew about Hotyoga. This changed soon and now there are more and more coming, including tourists. She teaches in Spanish, if something is to correct, for foreigners she does is in English. After the workout you can realax – preferrably outside in the green.
