“My first class in Zurich was a high-light”

The 27 years old, young Stefania is used to staying on stage or in front of a camera. After passing an acting school and even a seminar for stunt work and the handling of weapons, she can be seen in plays, films or in commercials.

Shortly before flying to Los Angeles to train to become a Bikram teacher under Bikram Choudhury in 2014, she took part in a class in the studio in Zurich. Swiss master Timo was teaching, but to her surprise stopped the session in order to provide her with the opportunity to show and guide the others through the half-moon pose. She managed to do so with flying colours!

Now, she’s back from her training and has taught in various places, such as Hawaii. Today, she gave her very first lesson in Zurich. Around 40 Yogis make up a pretty huge class and a very compact energy. Eight teachers – Stefan, Manuela, Sonia, Christine, Sandra, Timo, Beat and Fabian – are taking part, too, and give the newcomer their support.

Stefania Maria Bernet teaches, as if she has done it for ages: She knows the dialogue in English by heart and is extremely confident. Thanks to her background as an actress, she is able to vary her voice and make sure, that there is never one dull moment during her sessions. She manages to include the 26 poses and two breathing exercises within the predetermined 90 minutes with ease. Her time management is flawless. At the end her Yogis award her with a roaring applause. Stefania states happily: “My first class in Zurich was a high-light.” It probably won’t take long until she mastered the dialogue in German as perfectly and vividly.

Liliane Burkhard

„Yoga will change your life; it changed ours!“

Liliane

„Yoga will change your life; it changed ours“, möchte sie künftige Yogis ermuntern.

„Yoga will change your life; it changed ours“

Liliane Burkhard comes from Lucerne. She learnt about Bikram Yoga in Zurich, in the very first studio in Switzerland. This was ten years ago, only two years later she felt ready to do the Teacher Training in Los Angeles. 2008 she opened together with Julie Abay the second studio in Switzerland in Lucerne. (Julie Abay meanwhile is back to Zurich and is teaching therefore, also her first studio).

Liliane Burkhard is teaching in English and also in English. Her first yoga style was Iyengar-Yoga. She is also a certified Power-Yoga-teacher and she is teaching Vinyasa Yoga at college sports in Lucerne. After the opening of her own studio she didn’t stop learning about the different sorts of yoga. She travelled a lot, teaching all over the world like in the US, in Melbourne or Bangkok. „Yoga will change your life; it changed ours“, she tells. She likes it to organise special events as there are posture clinic Worshops or even Acro Yoga Playshops. The carneval is a subject too: in Yoga of course!

Craig Villani

„I am grateful to have been placed upon this path“

„As a first-time student of hatha yoga, I was fortunate enough to walk into Bikram Choudhury’s legendary Beverly Hills studio on a prophetically hot Sunday morning in September, 1998. With absolutely no desire to teach yoga whatsoever, I enrolled in his Intensive Teacher Training Course nine months later, and graduated with forty-eight other emergent instructors“, erinnert er sich. Er sagt: „I am grateful to have been placed upon this path, and honored to share it with those whom I continue to meet along the way.“

„I am grateful to have been placed upon this path“

Craig Villani had a important function during the International Yoga Championship in London. He was the speaker and noticed every second that passed. „Begin please“, were the words he started with each participant in the competition. He was able to create a relaxed atmosphere. He even gave a very inspiring workshop at the studio London Bridge and talked about the therapeutic benefits of Bikram yoga.

The master is not only a senior teacher he is also well known within the yoga community. „As a first-time student of hatha yoga, I was fortunate enough to walk into Bikram Choudhury’s legendary Beverly Hills studio on a prophetically hot Sunday morning in September, 1998. With absolutely no desire to teach yoga whatsoever, I enrolled in his Intensive Teacher Training Course nine months later, and graduated with forty-eight other emergent instructors“, he remembers. Within a year, Bikram’s Teacher Training had expanded to include over two hundred students (today 500!). Bikram asked him to assist in guiding the process. He was immersed in the work for eight years. Beside his work as a senior teacher and presenter he organises yoga retreats in Australia and Hawaii. He sais: „I am grateful to have been placed upon this path, and honored to share it with those whom I continue to meet along the way.“

Gerry Lopez
„I wanted to make a more tangible positive contribution to the world“

„I was looking for self-growth and I was fascinated by what yoga could bring into my life“, sagt er.

Auf die Frage, was Bikram Yoga für ihn bedeute, sagt er: „A clear mind, a strong and flexible body.“

„I wanted to make a more tangible positive contribution to the world“

Gerry Lopez grew up in Mexico and moved to England about 13 years ago. His first contact with the yoga world was 20 years ago when he was 18 years old. „I was looking for self-growth and I was fascinated by what yoga could bring into my life“, are his words. He discovered Bikram Yoga in 2004 and since the first class he was taken in. At that time he was training to run a marathon. The Bikram Yoga class not only left him feeling great, physically and mentally, but he also felt the huge improvement in body flexibility. Moreover, the feeling after each class even today is amazing!

In 2011 he decided to take his yoga to the next level. He had been working in financial markets but wanted to make a more tangible positive contribution to the world. So, he decided to become a Bikram Yoga teacher to share those amazing life changing benefits that Bikram Yoga brings into people’s lives. It has been one of the best decisions he has taken in his life. He loves teaching. The energy exchange in the yoga room and seeing people improve themselves class by class, has provided him with an incredible feeling of satisfaction. Hence, he decided the next step in his yoga path, which was to open a Bikram Yoga school. So he can create a space to share Bikram’s Yoga teachings to help more people live healthier and longer. Asked about what Bikram means to him, he says: „A clear mind, a strong and flexible body.“

Bikram Yoga Clapham Junction, London

My visit of the studio Clapham Junction, only one station to the South of Victoria Station will be the highlight of my this year’s London trip. From the station one can follow the mainstreet St. John’s Hill. Gerry Lopez opened the studio in June 2013. It is full of surprises. All the facilities have been custom built. Features include 12 modern showers, a large chill-out area where one can relax before and after class. There is a spacious yoga room, from which one can see through a window the reception desk and even the traffic on the street. The best thing is the latest in heating and humidity technology. This unique heating system ensures the air is always rich in oxygen, the yogis can practice more easily and breath deeper.

After class, taught by Jasmine Osbourne in an excellent English, I am relaxing on the mat, grateful for this special experience during my voyage through all the Bikram yoga studios in Europe: This one is unique!

Fierce Grace City, London

“If you are looking for Bikram Yoga North, Bikram Yoga West, Bikram Yoga City and Bikram Yoga Primrose Hill, Michele Pernetta’s Yoga studios, and the information that used to be on this site, we have rebranded the studios”, steht auf der Webside.

London

Nearly a year after I visited the crammed Bikram Yoga City in London, I visited it for a second time. Situated in a different building, just a five minutes walk-distance from the former one. “If you are looking for Bikram Yoga North, Bikram Yoga West, Bikram Yoga City and Bikram Yoga Primrose Hill, Michele Pernetta’s Yoga studios, and the information that used to be on this site, we have rebranded the studios” says the webside. Its name is Fiercegrace. Michelle Pernetta, who introduced Bikram yoga to the UK fifteen years ago, did a big step away from Bikram’s serie.

I knew about the changes which were made too and was looking forward to practice this new serie of postures. I chose the „Classic“: Instead of 26 poses there are 39. The changes bring deep alignment, stamina-buildung, strength and flexibility. In regards to me; I like the traditional Bikram-Yoga-class better. I can take more time for the particular poses and go deeper into them. There is also a short class “The Fix”, a condensed classic class. It is meant for the motivated person on a tight schedule. The „Fierce Grace“ class offers even more hip openers, upper body strength, bum toners and core stability for a fully rounded workout, performed to relaxing music. “Core” is a 75-minutes deep, slow class designed to open mind and in tune with the body. And finally “The Beast” is only for advanced yogis.

David was our teacher. He did his job with the different postures well, though in other studios he teaches the Bikram-serie, too. He enjoyed the change to the new place after the old and nearly dark one. In the beginning, he missed the personal touch, the rooms seemed kind of bare-faced to him. But meanwhile he likes the special character of the studio. Out of question: When I lived in the near this place; I would certainly practise in this studio and get used to this new hot yoga type.
