Practice Support Class in Zurich

In cooperation with Ky Ha, World Champion 2013 and Weronika Hercog (Vee) the Bikram Yoga studio in Zurich has developed an additional strength and flexibility workout which supports the regular Bikram Yoga practice in an exciting new way.

Starting from 23th January 2015 there is offered the yogis a newly designed class once a week, every Friday at 18:30. The 60 minutes sequence is called Practice Support Class and there will be taught techniques to deepen everyone’s Bikram Yoga practice.

Lady Gagas signierte Yoga-Matte in Zürich

„Yoga makes me feel like I can do anything. Lipstick makes me feel like a slut. – I only need these two things to survive – Lady Gaga“, steht gut leserlich auf der Matte.

Bikram Yoga Soho, London

Bolsover Street, W1W5DW London, www.sohotbikramyoga.co.uk

The Soho studio on Bolsover Street can be reached from Regents Park Station or Oxford Circus. It belongs to the same owner as the Sohot Victoria – both of them are located in the town centre. Victoria opened 4 years ago, Bolsover Street 2008. The difference in age is obvious. One notices that they share the same furniture, the same decorations. Even the colour scheme, which is mostly in warm red and brown. Stairs go down to the basement where all rooms are grouped around the front desk. Behind the front desk you can find a cosy lounge. A positive surprise are the rather large but very simple changing rooms. Yet the hot room without any windows is a disappointment. Even if it comes with a special hygienique floor and a new modern fresh air system. But all the pipes and tubes are visible: It has the charms of a construction site.

Both studios together offer 82 lessons weekly. More and more of them are express classes, which last 60 instead of 90 minutes. I am attending such a short class in the early Saturday morning. We are a small group of 12 yogis and I can learn quite a few things from the teacher Krzysztof Grabowski. I estimate especially that he tells which posture have do be done twice (such as halfmoon, important because the spine is working in all directions, camel-pose with the deepest backbend and the rabbit-pose with the strongest forwards-bend); all the other postures are done only once but longer. It seems that there is quite a demand for this lessons. In Switzerland there is only the studio in Basel which offers them by now.

100. Studio besucht!

„Irène on her way to visit all Bikram Yoga Studios in Europe“, I have just practiced in the 100th studio (of 150) – in 14 different countries so far, at the moment staying in London… Wimbledon was the 100th!

Bikram Yoga Highbury & Islington

When I visited the studio Clapham Junction during the World Yoga Championship last year, Gerry Lopez advised me to also visit the Highbury & Islington studio which opened two years ago. Today I made his suggestion come true. He didn’t promise too much: The studio is located on the ground floor of a modern rounded red brick building. The rounding results in a fancy, interesting room layout. There are bare white walls, in the hot room the dark wooden floor gives a lovely contrast. The changing rooms are long and narrow – especially during the „change of shift“ it feels crowded like in many other studios. Between the hot room and the front desk area is a window, similar like in some studios in Madrid.

Elsa is the teacher. In London it seems to be normal to have 25 to 30 yogis practising every lesson. It’s really amazing how popular Bikram Yoga became in this cosmopolitan city. Elsa’s voice is friendly and supporting, so she doesn’t need a headset. She is a qualified teacher – she has the level of competence of the best of our Swiss teachers…

Bikram Yoga Wimbledon London

7 Elm Grove, SW194 HE London, www.bikramyogawimbledon.com

Wimbledon is my jubilee studio – the 100th I visited so far! Raj, the owner, told me in advance this studio would be unforgettable for me. How right he was. In the first place the Indian decorated the studio exactly the same way as the homepage is designed: oriental style, without appearing excessive. There is a juice bar where the yogis can order drinks before the workout and have them served afterwards. The changing rooms are located at the ground floor, on the first floor a really large, hot and humid room waits for the yogis. On the walls, the windows and the doors flower petals seem to be blooming.

The second thing which won’t let me forget this special studio is Ray himself. He is teaching in a quiet manner, without talking the dialogue monotonously. There is background music playing which is rather unexpected for a Bikram yoga studio. But it helps to fade out the noise of the trains running by every other minute in the vicinity. The instructor addresses his „regulars“ (the studio opened 4 years ago). He seems to know all about postures and difficulties. Next weekend he will organise a workshop at which he will address all these difficulties.

Hot Bikram Yoga Balham, London

Hildred Street Mews, SW129 RZ London, www.hotbikramyoga.co.uk

(neuer Name Hot Yoga South, is associated with Bikram Yoga Brighton, www.hotyogasouth.com)

It’s obvious: The Balham-Studio near the underground station with the same name in the south-west of London has the same corporate identity as the London Bridge and the Fulham studios. One notices also that there has been some redecoration recently. The studio’s surroundings are lovely, it’s placed in a courtyard. The logos are the same as in the other studios, as is the furniture and the styling.

Carolyn Jikiemi-Roberts, who is owner of the Portslade studio in Brighton bought this at the beginning of this year from Olga Allon. She says she didn’t teach herself in the studio before, but now she is going to teach here as often as in Brighton. The logos will have to be changed. I really would like to practice in this studio another time, preferrably with Carolyn who is a gifted teacher!

Sherene Skinner is teaching the afternoon-class. She is pushig us hard and is very motivating, and even though for me it’s todays second class, I can handle it – once more I see how important the role of the teacher for the performance of the class is.

Hot Bikram Yoga Fulham London

25 Heathman’s Rd
, SW6 4TJ London, www.hotbikramyoga.co.uk
The Fulham studio is near the Underground station Parsons Green, not too far from the Thames river. It opened 9 years ago. Later the Balham studio was added and the latest is the one at London Bridge, which I visited last May. All three of them work under the same Logo and until now all the Abos were exangeable. Last week Olga Allon has sold the two older studios to different buyers, who are very connected to each studio. Olga wants to take a step back from her huge commitment of running 3 studios. „In particular, I’d like to spend more time at London Bridge and teach more regularly as that’s always been a passion of mine“, she says. The new owner of the Fulham studio is Melissa Mcintyre, who started practicing Bikram yoga 9 years ago at the very same place, five years ago she did the Teacher Training, then became Manager.

„I am going to redecorate the whole studio“, she says. Which seems a good idea.
The one thing is the limited space available. The other thing is the obvious wear and tear of the premises. I’m sure Melissa will be successful in creating a lovely studio. There is a fine smell in the air and music is playing in the back-ground. Cristian Liotta is teaching a short class of only 60 minutes instead of 90, so only experienced yogis have access. The rush of people is unbelievable, the laid-out mats on the floor aren’t enough. At the end, I don’t feel as if I had missed postures, in the contrary my body feels exercised and flexible.

Bikram Yoga Chiswick London

First Floor, The Studio, Essex Place, London W4 5UT, www.bikramyogachiswick.co.uk

It’s for the third time I am staying in London to visit some more Bikram Yoga studios. Chiswick, opened in 2002, belongs to the town part in the south-west of the city, situated in the middle between Paddington station and Heathrow Airport. Near the studio is the Chiswick High Road, the main street of Chiswick – lined with numerous shops and traditional pubs.

On the ground floor one has to leave the shoes behind and climb a spiral stair to the first floor. The front desk consists mostly of wood, which gives a friendly atmosphere. The changing rooms are too small for so many visitors, who come from Hammersmith, from Chiswick and from Kew. The hot room, however, is really huge. A row of high windows opens to Turnham Green, the church of which is illuminated during the night. The heating is old fashioned and noisy. It doesn’t matter because one feels comfortable and the decoration is chosen carefully.

Katie is teaching the lesson. 30 Yogis are dedicated and follow the instructions, the energy flows. Half an hour after the first 90-minute-lesson, the teacher will be teaching for a second time: at 20.15.

unnamed

„For me Yoga is the whole life – containing all of them“

Doris Ritter did the Teacher Training in fall 2013. Now she is teaching in Stefan’s studio in Zurich. First she practiced Hatha Yoga since she was 17 yers old; Bikram yoga she does for eight years now. When you watch her doing the workout herself you notice that she seems to put even more into it. It turns out to be her involvement in jazz dance that had given her a lot of knowledge about the body.

“For me Yoga is the whole life – containing all of them”, she says. For her it is important that you are careful with your body, from the inside to the outside. She is confident about the self-healing effects that are provided by yoga, because she was able to heal a lumbar disk.

When she is teaching she likes to share her knowledge with others. The most successful moments are the ones she calls light bulb moments: it’s a double effect which cause wellbeing also for the psyche. “What’s more: you can see how the yogis learn about taking responsibility for the own body.”
