Andrea Greiner

Practicing, teaching, managing

Andrea Greiner is the owner of the three studios in the Moravia region of the Czech republic: Five years ago she opened the first one in Ostrava, two years later the studio in Brno – where she lives – and one year ago the newest one in Olomouc. Brno is situated 200 kilometres to the east of Prague, Ostrava nearly 170 kilometres more, near the Polish boarder. Olomouc lies inbetween. All three studios are similar, they show the same logo and obviously the same handwriting.

Andrea first became a student of hot yoga in 2007 while living in Walnut Creek, USA. 2008 she did Bikram’s Teacher Training in Acapulco. Since then she learnt more and more. She traveled to 26 countries. She has a bachelor’s degree in business management. She completed a four week course in Kerala, India, where she lived together with other yogis practicing over 5 hours a day and cleansing body and mind through meditation and by abstaining from caffeine, meat and alcohol. She taught hot yoga in Ogden and Salt Lake City, USA, in Antwerp, Belgium and in the Czech Republic. She practices three to four times a week in her own studios and is teaching in all of them regularly. She isn’t only teaching her love to yoga, one can’t help feeling how deeply she is involved.

Hot City Yoga Ostrava

The third studio with the same logo is my final destination on this trip. It’s in Ostrava, 168 km to the east of Brno. It is situated between the hospital and the historic centre in an older building. You can see how Andrea Greiner, the owner, was able to create three beautifully decorated studios. All of them aesthetical and with great taste. There are flowers, small sculptures, pictures; even the light switches are decorated with flower patterns. The reception area is spacious. As in Brno and Olomouc, there are warm colours. Even though the studio is the oldest one and opened five years ago, it has a fresh and modern touch.

This Wednesday morning the owner herself is teaching. She lives in Brno and wants to teach in every studio regularly. The guest teacher Lori, by whom I was taught two days ago, is practicing today. We are 16 – all of us are women. Andrea is teaching in Czech; once she corrects me in English. She swiches a window open, even though the heating and air conditioning works quite fine. In London Anrea would be a senior teacher; she is really experienced. She seems to enjoy teaching very much.

Now I have visited all the studios in the Czech republic (the two studios in Prague I visited earlier). It was a great experience; all five of them are beautiful. Not only did I practice, but I learnt a lot about this country, the people, the history and the culture.

Hot City Yoga Olomouc

Never ever will I forget the studio in Olomouc, which opened one year ago. It’s situated between Brno in the west and Ostrava in the east – in the town of Olomouc you find it near the historic town center behind the university of education science. It reminded me not only on the first sight to the one under the same logo in Brno. Because the furniture is similar, the lockers in the changing rooms are the same, and so are the mats and the towels in the warm, rather dark colours. The studio has been designed to provide the students with a relaxing environment before, during and after class. The studio consists of over 300 square meters of renovated space.

What impressed me most is Lucie, the teacher. While we 12 yogis are relaxing on the belly between the postures and enjoy 20 seconds before the next exercice, she moves from one student to the next, standing with her feet on the yogi’s feet, teetering up and down. The effect of this kind of massage is amazing. Lucie travelled twice to India to learn Hatha yoga. She taught one and a half year in the other studio in Brno before moving to Olomouc, when this studio opened. She has several skillful patterns of Tatoos. I don’t understand Czech but I know what is wanted because I know all the posture. After the workout, her young, playful, affectionate dog is waiting eagerly for her – its tail happily wiggling…

Hot City Yoga Brno

To the east of Prague, there are three more Bikram yoga studios in the Czech republic. About every two years opened a new one: the one in Ostrava five years ago, one in Olomouc last year and one in Brno three years ago. All of them are owned by Andrea Greiner (see the picture on the left).

The first I visit is the Brno studio. It is situated to the northeast of the town center, just about one kilometer away from the world famous Villa Tugendhat which became an UNESCO world heritage in 2001.
The studio is in the Balkan Sport complex and is reached by a long, narrow corridor with a lot of doors and stairs. It feels rather cozy with its small hot room with the wooden floor. One wants to get used to the mirrored walls. One mirror in the front, one on the side wall and in the back. The result of which is that you see the people in the room not only once but hundreds of times. We are nine. Next to me is Andrea, the instructor is Lori, a Canadian who travels the world as a teacher. Next month, she will teach for some weeks in Geneva. Her lesson is in English but she already mixes in some words in the local language.

Marcela Marce Farías-Hidalgo/Mauricio Araya

„We started going and never stopped and realized we also wanted to teach and that is why we did the teacher training in 2014”, erzählen die beiden, die nun begonnen haben, in Zürich zu unterrichten.

Und: “In the far future we consider to open a studio of our own.”

„We can support each other during the class“

Mauricio heard about Bikam Yoga in Chile but never managed to go. In Zurich he and Marcela met some people who were attending classes. He gave Marcela a voucher as a Valentine’s day present (2011), and she started going very actively after that. She fell in love with practice and got better in stretching and building up strength. Mauricio was looking for some kind of sport that did not involve a gym or running (bad knees and being very lazy), so she convinced him to take classes too. When he tried it, he was in absolute pain after class, but thought he should do this for the rest of his life. “We started going and never stopped and realized we also wanted to teach and that is why we did the teacher training in 2014.”, they tell. They started to teach in Zurich enjoying the fact that they can go together and support each other during the class, but at the same time have an individual practice.

BY really helped them not only physically but also mentally. This practice has helped them to test and improve their determination and made them realize that wthey should not sit and wish for things to happen but to do it. Also, that they are stronger than they thought they were and that since they put their own limits, they can also go beyond them. They love to share that with the students. Marcela and Mauricio love to teach and will try to teach as much as possible all around the world, learn from other teachers and also from the students. In the far future they consider to open a studio of their own.
