Ab 1. Juni 2016 übernahm Sabine Wallach-Gerny neu das Basler Studio.

I like Basel: the town, the people, my in-law, my daughter-in-law  – and I definitively love the Bikramyoga Studio. It’s the first in Switzerland to offer from Monday to Thursday a 60-minute-class at noon, instead the official 90-minute-workout. In London for example they do it all the time, especially studios in business quarters. When we are practising we still are only a small group – one will see how this will develop. Sarah is teaching. It’s special, one goes deeper in the postures, because there is no second opportunity. I like it once in a time, but wouldn’t want to miss the full time classes. Vanessa, the new manager, sees it the same way. She is open minded and will give it a try.

*

Attendum:The 60-minute-classes were cancelled after October 2015. The lessons weren’t attended well enough, so it was changed into a Hot Vinyasa Flo class in a 30 degrees hot room

Since the 1st of June 2016 Sabine Wallach-Gerny is the new owner.

Yoga Bikram Nizza

8 Boulevard Carnot 06300 Nice, www.bikramyoganice.fr

For four years now, there is a small, nice and cosy studio close to the old port in Nice. It is located on the fourth floor of the former Carnot hotel. The owner, Michael F. Gilbourne, has done well in decorating and embellishing every single space. The building is rather old, but the top floor is quite amazing, even though it’s packed: one has to pass through the hot room to get to the small changing rooms, and there is only a single shower cabine available.

14 yogis are practicing this evening, among them four men – and the room is already quite full. Michael is not only a teacher who did his teacher training in 2001, he is also a crano sacral therapeut, so he can mix his two professions perfectly. He teaches the first set in English and the second one in French because half of the people spoke one language. His energy and determination come through to the class. Five 90 minute Bikram-yoga lessons are offered during one week as well as five 60 minute hot-yoga lessons and also lessons for children on Wednesday and Saturday afternoon. Before Michael moved back to France because of his family he conducted two prospering studios in Florida. His wife teaches another kind of Yoga; they have two little girls.

Bikram Hot Yoga Valencia

Calle Marva 11, 46007 Valencia, www.bikramhotyogavalencia.com

Eladio Garrido’s studio is located on calle Marva, next door to the Finca Roja: a beautiful red brick building, built in the 1930s. It’s a typical town-studio, not too big but functional, including all necessary rooms and well planned. Eladio is the only teacher and the owner too. He teaches 15 hours a week. Besides that, he does the laundry, the cleaning and all the administrative work. Besides that he takes his time to practice for himself – in other studios of course – and to jogging long distances.

He calls himself a Bikram Yoga follower who is living after the rules. So one is not surprised how exactly he knows the dialogue (which he manages to teach in three languages), how exactly he finishes the class. He doesn’t go for 60-minute-classes or silent classes. He is teaching with great knowledge and a lot of enthusiasm for the yoga. 14 yogis are practicing this Tuesday morning in the hot room, some of them are doing a 30- or a 60-day-challenge.

Eladio Garrido

Ironman-Triathlon und Bikram-Yoga

IMG_2805

„I was a keen athlete, always on the go, so she thought Bikram would be perfect for me“, erzählt Eladio. „On one hand these are great experiences because they do make you feel fit but on the other they do put pressure on your joints and you can end up with an injury.“ Bikram Yoga ermöglichte es ihm, viel flexibler zu werden und stärkere Gelenke aufzubauen.

Ironman Triathlon and Bikram Yoga

The teacher Eladio Garrido has both French and Australian nationalities. He speaks French, English and Spanish fluently, also the dialogue. He has been a software engineer in large companies for more than 25 years: in London, Sydney, Amsterdam, Paris.

After a bike accident his physiotherapist recommended him to practice Bikram yoga. „I was a keen athlete, always on the go, so she thought Bikram would be perfect for me“, Eladia tells. He started his practice in Sydney in December 1999. Afterwards he moved to Amsterdam where he practiced at Teresa’s, later in Paris. He learnt about the great benefits of this sort of yoga, even more, because he completed 4 ironman triathlons and had run 48 marathons. „On one hand these are great experiences because they do make you feel fit but on the other they do put pressure on your joints and you can end up with an injury.“ So Bikram has allowed him to increase his flexibility and helped to get his joints stronger, furthermore it allowed him to improve his concentration and to relax.

In Paris he practiced more and more, because outdoors activities were rather difficult to get to. Eventually the need to become a teacher started. He joined the Teachter Training in 2011. He says his return home was difficult, because the competition was big in Paris with only one studio owner and more than 25 teachers and 4 new students. Finally he learnt the dialogue in three languages, in English, French and Spanish. He taught in Bordeaux, he even taught in Switzerland and Belgium. Eventually he decided to open his own studio in Valencia one year ago. He is really dedicated to this yoga. And he is very busy, because he is teaching every single lesson himself: 15 a week. When he wants to practise, he has to do it in a different studio.

Bikram Yoga Valencia

The most recent studio of Valencia is the one in the Calle Ciril Amoros in the barrio L’Eixample. It hadn’t opened when I visited it on behalve of problems with the installation of the heating system. The Yogi friends of owner, Raquel Sobrino, came from Madrid anyway to celebrate the opening – and were astonished. In a typical Art Deco building from 1908, a stylish combination between the original bulding structure and modern furniture has been created. One sees the original brick walls and even parts of the tiled floors. Even a spacy rest room for the instructors is there. The carpet of the hot room is made out of enviromenal friendly coco fibres.

For two years, Raquel was looking for a fitting place till she found the bijou close to the Colon subway station and started to have it rebuilt according to her intentions. Raquel, a MBA who’s origin is Madrid and worked later for a bank in Valencia came in contact with Bikram yoga in 2009. She immediately loved it and did her teacher training in 2011. She then thought in the various Madrid studios of Lucia Kelly and many more all around. She enjoys teaching and her experience as a business woman makes sure her studio is unique.
*
When I visited this studio in October last year, I couldn’t take a lesson yet. Now it was time to catch up. All the facilities were as beautiful and modern as I expected them to be. Raquel is teaching us 5 women and one single man in a strict, lively, competent manner. She is speaking Spanish, now and there she is using English when she is addressing me to correct my positions. Unusual is that she turns her back towards us, regarding our practice in the large front mirror. Flip-Flops are compulsory between the changing rooms and the hot room. After the sweaty workout hot tea is offered in a modern and nevertheless cosy relaxing room. It’s just like I expected it to be: the most impressive studio ever …

Bikram Yoga Spain Valencia

Three years ago opened the studio Bikram Yoga Spain Maldonado in Madrid. I practiced there in May. Now I visited the studio Bikram Yoga Spain in Valencia, some 320 kilometers to the Southeast. It has opened only two years ago and is located near the 8,5 kilometer long Jardines del Turia. It’s quite obvious: Both studios belong together, one notices easily the same lettering and the same logo. The studio is surprisingly huge with a wide reception area, spacious changing rooms with wardrobe closets that can be locked and simple benches and interlaced shower cabins. The hot room has a good working air-condition-system; the floor seems to be warmer than in other studios, nevertheless the heat is well regulated.

Alberto, who is teaching in Madrid also, is the instructor. The lesson lasts the regular 90 minutes. He is lively, kind and even though I don’t understand Spanish, I am sure he is an excellent teacher. I feel like new born after the exhausting postures and the many sweat drops.
