Bikram Yoga Spain Elche

Teresa unterrichtet in ihrem temperamentvollen Spanisch.

How would my trip to Elche turn out? I went with a queasy feeling to the studio because I hadn’t got any answer to several contacts about my visit. I didn’t even know for sure if there would be lessons at all. So I was not only amazed but very pleased about the high quality lesson given by Tereza.

The studio is located on the western side of the river Vinalopo which divides the town in a high apartment building. It opened two years ago, at first on its own. Since a few months it is under the roof of Bikram Yoga Spain with runs studios for example in Madrid and Valencia (which I visited both). At the same time the studio increased in space. It’s a typical town studio, the director is Consuelo Asencio. The studio is rather small, neatly arranged and clean. In the hot room the floor cover is hygienical and also practical. Jacqueline from the Netherlands lives in Alicante. She practises every week in Elche. She tells me that about 7 to 14 yogis usually attend a class.

We are seven women and two men. Teresa is instructing us in her lively Spanish. Not only does she teach the Bikram dialogue absolute correctly (she wasn’t taught by himself – normally I don’t write about such studios). She also explains which postures are healthy and – most of all – she makes excellent corrections. A moment of glory regarding to the teaching!

Well done, Karin!!

It was worth waiting: In the trendy Zurich West a real juwel of a Bikram yoga studio became real. For a long time one didn’t know where Karin Circelli-Zemp and her husband would open their new studio. Their search lasted three years. Now, Saturday, the 26th of September, they opened a strikingly beautiful studio at Heinrichstrasse 267 in a building right behind the Abaton cinema complex. After an intensive time of rebuilding, conversion and administrative matters. The opening-day was an enormous success, with all sorts of yoga and tasty vegane food and fine juices.

Behind a glass door on the right side of the first floor is a spacy reception area, equipped with elegant pieces of furniture made of precious material. Equally stylish are the changing rooms and the showers. As to the yoga rooms: there are two of them, one unheated and smaller and a larger one with two high windows with rounded edges. The heating-airing system is working without noise but really efficient. The floor is covered with a soft carpet which requires a lot of muscle work.

Karin did her Teacher Training in 2009. Since then she didn’t only teach in Zurich and later in Basel but learnt many things about the body and how it works. She studied also other styles of yoga and deepened her knowledge more and more. We were her very first Bikram yoga class in her new studio. There were some 30 yogis, a big part of them yoga teachers from Zurich, Schlieren, Konstanz, Luzern, Basel or Bern. Karin did the class the way she always used to: qualified, in her good humour which is always catching. Well done, Karin!!

Katja Aydemir is an extraordinary teacher. She seems to notice every small mistake und does not only correct it but also shows how exactly the postures should be done. Or, for better understanding, how it shouldn’t be done. She is teaching Hot Yoga and Pilates in the Yoga Corner in Schlieren. As a freelance teacher you can see her also instruct in other studios.

After having given birth to her daughter in 2002 she had got twice a herniated disc. As a woman who likes to take exercise as much as possible, she startet Yoga and Tai Chi. She became a educationalist in this sports and especially for ill people. She became aware how she was able to heal herself – so she did the training as a Yoga and a Pilates instructor.

She likes the teaching. In her own eyes it’s her duty to impart to others what they benefit by doing these postures.

Fiona McNamara

Sie unterrichtete sechs Jahre in Dublin, später in New York. Sie zitiert Bikram: „Never too old never too sick to start all over from scratch again.“

Five Times Irish Champion

Fiona McNamara is the new owner of the City studio in Dublin. Not only is she a yoga teacher but was also a primary school teacher in Dublin for 6 years, later she taught in NYC. She likes to be in motion and did a lot of dancing. When she hurt her knee she learnt about yoga. The effect was that she did not only heal the knee, her whole body changed. „I can be quite extreme“, she says about herself. She likes the intensity of Bikram yoga and also the heat. She quotes Bikram: „Never too old never too sick to start all over from scratch again.“

She has been taking part in championships for many years and did very well. For instance she became the Irish champion for 5 times and during the international championships she was among the ten best.

She likes the teaching very much; she finds it thrilling to instruct and help people with their practise. „The same way we brush of our teeth every single day we should to with the practising.“ She remembers one of her teachers say: “100% freedom of movement, 100% freedom of pain looking exactly how you want to , not how other people think you should”. As to the studio: she wants so make some important changes and improvements.

Bikram Yoga City Dublin

What super trendy  area would be complete without a Bikram Yoga studio? Drury Street’s answer is Bikram Yoga Dublin City. Bikram yoga is hot yoga, like yoga crossed with a sauna and it’s the chosen pastime of the super famous. George Clooney, Lady Gaga, Madonna and David Beckham are all fans.“

56-58 Drury Street, Dublin 2, www.dublincitybikramyoga.com

Bikram City is the last studio I am to visit in Dublin. It’s in the most striking area, in the middle of trendy streets. What’s more: Drury Street is considered as the up and coming environment – near the Trinity university, the bank of Ireland, the City Hall and the Castle, surrounded by the typical red brick buildings. In one simple word: Beautiful. And when I read about the place, I found this accurate description: „What super trendy area would be complete without a Bikram Yoga studio? Drury Street’s answer is Bikram Yoga Dublin City. Bikram yoga is hot yoga, like yoga crossed with a sauna and it’s the chosen pastime of the super famous. George Clooney, Lady Gaga, Madonna and David Beckham are all fans.“

Fiona McNamara is the new owner of this studio which opened four years ago. Like all the other studios in Dublin it seems to need some renovations. But there are some affectionate details, such as candles in the toilets or incense sticks, in short: it serves for our purposes well enough. Fiona tells me that a lot of tourists, especially from the US, use her offer.

The teacher and new owner, who did her Teacher-Training together with Beat und Karin, two teachers from Zurich, is guiding us (seven women) very confidentely. She even demonstrates a special posture in the right and in the wrong way, so the exact alignement will stay in my mind. Hopefully she will be able to teach as often as possible beside her new work!

Bikram Yoga Fairview Dublin

157-159 Richmond Rd, Fairview, Dublin 3, www.bikram.ie

For once a stroll from the city center to the studio in the north a few kilometres afar. So you can be aware how the surroundings are changing: At first there are hunderts of commuters, busses, trains and heavy traffic. After having passed the Royal Canal in the North and lar the river Tolka, there is nothing urban left. Ducks are swimming in the water and a grey heron is stalking.

Similar as in the other studios I visited these days one finds this one also located in a kind of backyard, together with other training centers and with industrial businesses. Tthe toilets are shared with the adjoining school of ballet. And so is the relax lounge outside the studio. The reception area is tiny but cosy. Carole will be teching. Grainne Martin (on the right side), opened this simple, small studio 2009 as the second in Ireland. She did her Teacher Training nearly ten years ago. She is practicing next to me; we are 5 women and two men.

Carole is a gifted teacher. I feel completely at ease, even though the postures have to be done exactly. She is able to speak in a horrend speed, without being hectic. On the opposite: One feels like having done a really good thing for body, mind and soul!

Bikram Yoga Dublin

Greenmount, Industrial Estate Greenmount Avenue, Harold’s Cross, Dublin, www.bikramyoga.ie

The name Bikram Yoga Dublin is well deserved. It was the first studio in Ireland. It opened 2003 in Portobello. At Harold’s Cross place – once more in an industrial estate – is it since 2008. Anne Leonard is the owner.

The blue logo is highly distinctive, one sees it at once in the middle of the factory buildings. The outside of the building looks even more neclected than the other studio I visited in the morning. However one feels welcome, the surroundings are sunny, there is a lively coming and going. A yogi arrives and sits down on the metal stairs of the neighbouring building. Then Nathan Newell, the teacher, is arriving. The yogi tells me that he is a very good teacher. In the basement women are also speaking about their favorite teachers and their respective skills. I for myself have my favorite teachers, but I also like the diversion – in order to to learn more because of their different styles

The ground floor with the large hot room – again with a red carpet – seems to be rather free spirited. Nathan explains that the newer studios were opened by former teachers. His teaching is quiet but nevertheless motivating: „You can do it“ and then what I like most „take a deep breath“ after an exhausting posture. Would I live near here you would meet me practising here – despite of the studio’s surroundings.

Bikram Yoga D15 Dublin

46B Coolmine Industrial estate Dublin, www.bikramdublin.ie

What sort of transport should one choose? By train you are faster, but the way to the station is longer. Moreover from the bus you have an excellent view of Dublins surroundings. The Studio 15 is located 13 Kilometres outside the city center in the Coolmine Industrial Estate in the North-West. When you arrive there you may be disapponted, the neclected buildings are plastered all over with advertisements. So much that the bikram logo is nearly invisible.

The outside of the building looks rather dreary. Yet the interior of the location looks much nicer. After having passed a long small corridor the place seems to grow and brighten into a very bright hot room with the same red carpet I saw yesterday. Instead of a wall between the desk and the hot room there is a large glass front. When you go upstairs you find the very simple furnitured changing rooms and the showers. One is supposed not to shower more than 3 minutes. „Please think about those waiting“ says a placard on the wall.

Anne-Marie Browne is the owner of this place that opened 6 years ago. She is practising together with us. Fiona is the teacher. She is instructing 10 women and 5 men. She does not only know the dialogue thoroughly but is also able to correct postures, say encouraging words and tell what all the postures offer as benefits. She tells me that she is teaching also at the Fairview studio in which I am going to practise as the 5th of all the Dublin studios. Who knows, perhaps I can enjoy her once more as a teacher?!

Yoga Bikram Sandyford Dublin

Sandyford Industrial Estate Dublin 18, www.yogabikram.ie

A half hours ride by car or one hour by bus and train towards the South of Dublin and you are in a developing industrial area surrounded by parks and very close to the sea. The name: Sandyford Industrial Estate. The studio with the same name is located in the middle of modern buildings. It opened five years ago; one year ago Jenise became the new owner. She did the Teacher Training 2008 – together with Karin, the owner of the studio in Geneva.

This early evening she is the teacher. And a excellent one, too! She is instructing seven women and three men in an agreable and at the same time challenging manner. She gives corrections about which of them I never knew. One of the yogis told me that her son’s girl-friend is the new owner of the studio at the Drury street. She will tell her that I am going there too…

Jenise told me that the studio is in need of a refurnishment. She is right. Nevertheless, the studio has a charming atmosphere: a cosy reception-area with sunflowers is expecting the yogis. The unexpectedly huge hot room with a lot of  corners and a red carpet is downstairs. Wooden stairs lead to the first floor where the very simple changing-rooms and the showers have their places. At the end of the workout there are fruit slices offered. Jenise offers me a coconut water drink and we say good-bye with a big hug. Those who attend the next lesson are already arriving.
